Blender is a free 3D modeling package available for download from

I began by following a few simple tutorials and learning the basics along the way, altering different lighting and reflections etc, and manipulating different objects within the scene. Here are some of my first attempts.

This was my first attempt

This was my first attempt

As you can see, it was just a basic tutorial on how to do a simple model, and apply textures and different properties to the textures. After playing around with a few tools, I managed to make a cluster of these, all similar but altering some aspects of them.

Attempt two

As you can probably tell, I kept the same lighting and surfaces, but tampered with the vertices of the models, to simply and easily make a whole new object.

Messing with the shape of these simple objects gave me the idea of creating a pillar, and duplicating it to fill a vast area. Here is how that went…

Not too good

Unfortunatly the textures and properties didn’t go to plan, and I needed to start it from fresh, but I had done what I wanted and all went well, so I moved onto something a bit different.

I followed a tutorial, again on the same website, on how to create hills, or landscaping a plane. It was all about altering vertices and sing subsurf modifiers, and now, after doing a couple other tutorials, I was able to understand blender a bit better. This is what I came up with.

This went better than I expected, again using textures, in this case the grass.

Useful Texture Properties

But like last time, a tutorial wasn’t enough. I decided to mess around with it a bit. I found myself creating what looked like a car bonnet. I made sure it was symetrical and using the same Subsurf modifiers, managed to make it look smooth. I need a bit more practice on changing the properties of textures, as I couldn’t manage to make it look polished, but here is what I came up with, crossing two planes perpendicular to each other, and making it into a car shape.

Didn't go to plan

Didn't go to plan

As hard as I tried to get the two planes to meet, it didn’t look as good as I had hoped, so I searched for how to get them to blend together.
